An excerpt from the Spiritual Geography series. Welcome, Pilgrim, to the wonder and mystery of sacred journaling. You are about to discover a potent tool that has the potential to open your mind and heart directly to heaven. When disaster strikes, it seems difficult, if not impossible, to pray.
From the depths of our sorrow and pain we want to pray, but we can’t; we don’t know how. Sacred journaling is a practical and powerful answer to that eternal question: How do I pray?
Through the guided exercises in the Spiritual Geography series, you will learn how to build a highway of reciprocal communication between you and the divine. You will write, and God will listen. God will write, and you will listen. It’s that simple, and that mysterious.
Sacred journaling is easy to do, inexpensive, and at your fingertips twenty-four hours a day. To receive the full, rich benefits of sacred journaling, you have just four things to do:
1. Show Up Make a commitment. Set aside at least thirty minutes a day for God. Then, keep your appointment. You can’t make the connection or receive the benefits if you don’t show up.
2. Open Up Begin each journal entry, “Dear God.” Writing a salutation to Spirit shifts your consciousness and opens a pathway to your soul. With your greeting on the page, begin to open your heart and spill your guts. Don’t edit yourself. Don’t leave something out because you think it’s too awful, too scary, or too pathetic to share with God. (As if God didn’t already know!) You will receive the richest guidance when you truly bare your soul to God.
3. Listen Up This may come as a surprise, but God is standing by waiting to whisper in your soul’s ear. But you can’t hear that glorious small voice until you become quiet and listen. It may take a while to discern God’s voice from the cacophony of demands and advice bouncing around in your head, and you may have to strain to hear it, but Spirit is talking to you. Sacred journaling is simply a highly effective vehicle to facilitate and capture that conversation. By dumping your woes on paper, you are going through an essential part of the process: emptying your heart and creating a space for Spirit to enter. The day will come when, with elation, you will look at something in your journal and know it isn’t you. You may not like what you read, but you will recognize Wisdom’s loving voice.
4. Follow Up Once you receive guidance and recognize it as guidance, it is incumbent upon you to take it. It’s pretty rude to ask the almighty for help and then say, “Listen, God, that’s really great, but I’m just going to keep on doing things my way.” Don’t embark on this journey through Spiritual Geography thinking or hoping you’ll get your old life back. Your life, whether you like it or not, is about to change—a lot. You are on a pilgrimage—a sacred pilgrimage. The road to Peace may seem difficult—at times impossible—but take courage, Pilgrim, precious spiritual gifts are waiting for you every step of the way.
